ARC Utilizes Online Public Meetings to Reach More of the Region’s Residents

The Atlanta Regional Commission is currently in the mist of its regional planning process known as PLAN 2040. The existing conditions analysis and needs assessment are complete (and can be found here), and work has begun on goals, policies and implementation strategies. Plan 2040 will be adopted in mid-2011, and when completed, PLAN 2040 will be the metro Atlanta area’s plan to accommodate economic and population growth sustainably over the next 30 years.

In developing PLAN 2040, ARC has an opportunity for regional assessment, evaluation and possibly redirection as we work to develop effective regional policies and actions. Through this planning process ARC planners, with assistance from Atlanta citizens, are looking closely at how changes in population, jobs and economic growth impact us all. How does the Atlanta region most effectively deal with issues of traffic congestion, an aging population, a shrinking workforce, air quality and water quality across community and political boundaries?

As part of the Plan 2040 process, ARC, in coordination with The Civic League, is committed to undertaking an extensive public involvement process to ensure all residents who want their voice heard in the process, have an opportunity to do speak up.  From February to August of 2010 ARC conducted 123 outreach meetings, offered two online public meetings (with over 750 visits), and has maintained a project website.  The Civic League also hosted two neighborhood forums with 56 participants. The feedback heard during this process has helped direct ARC along the path to completing Plan 2040.

ARC’s next PLAN 2040 online meeting is now available. This third online public meeting will look at questions of how the region should grow based on our potential growth patterns, and how tough transportation funding decisions should be made. This information will be presented through four online presentations, and participants will be able to take a short survey afterwards and send ARC any additional thoughts you may have. ARC wants to hear from you – do not miss this opportunity to have your voice heard!
