Local Agriculture and Food Systems Conference Set for September 11

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 11 for the “Seeds of Growth” conference on local agriculture and food systems, to be held in Buford, Ga. from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Our friends at the Atlanta Local Food Initiative (ALFI) recently notified Land Matters of this event.  A conference description and other details are below, along with a contact for registration at the end of the post.

Interest in local food systems and sustainable agriculture has been growing in recent years.  Many communities around the country have seized upon this growing interest to develop environments where local agriculture has created impressive contributions to community and economic development.  “Seeds of Growth” is a conference designed to bring together key stakeholders in our area to learn about how the increasing demand for locally grown food can benefit local communities, aid economic development and become an important tool in community revitalization.  If you are a city official, school cafeteria manager, or farmers market manager, you should attend this conference.

Sessions will include:

  • Growing for Market: Farmers Markets and the Local Community
  • Growing the Cafeteria: Farm to School Programs in Georgia
  • Growing Our Reach: The State of Local Agriculture in Georgia
  • Growing Cooperation: The Atlanta Local Food Initiative
  • Growing the Crops: Meet the Farmers Roundtable
  • Growing the Melting Pot: How Local Food Creates Diverse Communities
  • Growing Visitors: How Agritourism Can Help Local Economies

Register Now for National Housing Conference “Solutions 2013” in September

The National Housing Conference and Center for Housing Policy will be hosting their annual national conference from September 16-18 here in Atlanta at the Marriott Marquis. Known as Solutions 2013, this event is the premier national conference on state and local housing policy.

The conference will arm practitioners, advocates, policy makers and program administrators with the best available information on how cities, counties and states can work collaboratively and creatively to address their residents’ housing challenges and develop inclusive, resilient and sustainable communities. Participants will also benefit from the federal policy expertise that only national organizations like the National Housing Conference and the Center for Housing Policy can bring.

Workshops are designed to meet the needs of seasoned advocates and practitioners while providing an introduction to housing policies and research that will help those new to the field get up to speed on the most important issues the housing community faces today. The conference agenda will include concurrent sessions on:

  • Restoring Neighborhoods
  • How Housing Matters
  • Solutions for Inclusive Communities

HUD Webinar Announced to Discuss New Capacity Building Grants

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for $4.5 million in capacity-building grants related to the Sustainable Communities program.

HUD staff will be hosting a public information webinar on Tuesday, July 16 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT to answer questions about these new grant opportunities. All interested parties are encouraged to participate. Registration information will follow in future HUD emails. Sign up for HUD’s Sustainable Communities email list here.

Questions may be submitted in advance to, and these questions will be used to help shape the agenda. Please note that HUD may not be able to answer all pre-submitted questions during the allotted webinar time.
