Living Beyond Expectations – Community Planning Academy and Tactical Urbanism Demonstration Project – June 19-22

Living Beyond Expectations is a tactical urbanism demonstration project being spearheaded by ARC as part of its Lifelong Communities initiative, with assistance from Team Better Block and noted planner, speaker, and writer Mike Lydon. From June 19-22, project leaders, stakeholders and volunteers will use short-term and low-cost methods to temporarily transform two blocks of Auburn Avenue in downtown Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward/Sweet Auburn neighborhood into a model Lifelong Community. The model created through this project will serve as a tangible example of how communities can transform themselves into places for all ages. We want you to be there!

Kicking off the project will be a Community Planning Academy (CPA) Workshop on June 19, exploring tactical urbanism, how it can help revitalize our cities, how older adults experience the aging process and can remain active in their communities, and how these ideas connect. The workshop is designed for local government elected officials and staff, CID leadership and staff, urban planners, transportation professionals, consultants, developers, and aging services professionals. Sessions will include:

  • Why This Matters: Making the Economic Case
  • The Biology of Aging
  • Tactical Urbanism 101: An Introduction;
  • Walking tour of project area Auburn Avenue neighborhood
  • Tactical Urbanism 202: Case Studies and the “How-To”

The cost is $50 and includes breakfast, lunch and all workshop materials. The workshop will be from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Ebenezer Baptist Community Resource Center. For more information and to register, visit http://bit.ly/cpatacticalurbanism.

Workshop attendees and the public are then invited to participate in the Hands-On Lab and Project Build-Out from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on June 20. Volunteers and community partners will transform two blocks of Auburn Avenue into a model Lifelong Community.  A protective bike lane will be installed, along with pop-up shops, cafes, a farmers’ market, health and wellness installations, art, live musical performances, and walking tours. Better Blocks Workshops will be hosted for various phases of the build-out as well. More information, including times and locations, is available at http://bit.ly/sweetauburn.

The final phase and “main event” for this project is the Temporary Street Transformation on June 21-22, when the hard work from the build-out will pay off and the demonstration will be open for the public to enjoy. The event will be open on June 21 from 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. and on June 22 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. More information, including times and locations, is available at http://bit.ly/sweetauburn.
